There are multiple names by which a dropped kerb or crossing may go by. They are an area of lowered pavement and kerb that can give access to vehicles from a highway across the footway or pathway and onto a commercial property or a residential driveway. They also allow pedestrians access to cross the road.
In the Highways Act it states that it is an offence to take a vehicle across a verge or footway without a properly constructed vehicle crossing. This can be for a number of reasons.
- Vehicles can cause damage to footway surfaces and verges as they aren’t designed to take so much weight
- Pipes and cables buried beneath footways could be damaged
- In their absence passersby may be in danger if unaware that vehicles may cross an area
If you need to drive a vehicle from a highway over a footway and onto a driveway or another type of property you will need a dropped kerb. If you do not have a dropped kerb it is breaking the law to drive over the footway.
Anyone can apply for a dropped crossing with their local council. We are a council approved and Street Works accredited contractor and are familiar with everything from the application process to the installation of dropped crossings. We offer free no obligation quotes for dropped kerbs so contact us to see how we can help.
